The Product

This original textile artwork explores our relentless need to consume and the ways desire is used to encourage us to want more.
At the centre of the piece is an idealised, seductive woman: an image of beauty and sexuality that promises pleasure while tempting us towards consumption. Behind her, blood spatter disrupts the seductive surface, suggesting that the things we desire are rarely without consequence. What appears attractive at first begins to reveal something more uncomfortable underneath.
The image is stitched in dense hand embroidery and mounted onto layers of patched fabric before being altered with paint and ink. The slow, labour-intensive stitching contrasts with the speed and disposability of consumer culture, while the patched and distressed surface gives the work the appearance of something already used, damaged and repaired.
The piece asks where desire ends and consumption begins, and what—or who—ultimately pays the price for our constant need for more.
