Abandoned Church Window

This original textile artwork depicts the remains of a church window in a building that has been left to decay.
Once created as a place of beauty, devotion and permanence, the window now survives without the people who once gathered around it. The work reflects on the passage of time and what happens to buildings when they lose their original purpose. Although abandoned, traces of care and craftsmanship remain within the deteriorating structure.
The piece is constructed from layers of patched fabric and hand stitching, creating an irregular, weathered surface suggestive of a building repaired and altered over many years. The church window is outlined in machine embroidery, coloured with inks and the piece is then embellished with appliqué.
The contrast between the decorative window and the distressed textiles reflects my fascination with abandoned architecture: places where beauty persists despite neglect and where fragments of former lives remain long after the people themselves have disappeared.
